Nissan Sentra B18 (2020-2025) Owner's Manual: How to select the cruise control mode

Nissan Sentra Intelligent Cruise Control ICC mode selection

Selecting the vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode: To activate the vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode (1) on the Nissan Sentra, briefly push and release the ICC switch (A). This mode enables adaptive control based on surrounding traffic.

Selecting the conventional (fixed speed) cruise control mode: To choose the conventional fixed-speed cruise control mode (2), press and hold the ICC switch (A) for longer than approximately 1.5 seconds. In this mode, the Nissan Sentra maintains a constant speed set by the driver.

Vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode

In the vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode, the Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) system in the Nissan Sentra automatically maintains a selected following distance from the vehicle traveling ahead. The system adjusts speed based on the lead vehicle’s speed, up to the driver-set cruising speed, or maintains the set speed when the road ahead is clear.

The ICC system is designed to enhance driving convenience and comfort when following another vehicle traveling in the same lane and direction.

If the radar sensor (A) detects a slower-moving vehicle ahead, the system reduces the Nissan Sentra’s speed so that it follows the vehicle in front at the selected distance.

The system automatically controls engine throttle and applies braking force, up to approximately 40% of the vehicle’s total braking capability, when necessary.

The forward detection range of the radar sensor is approximately 650 ft (200 m), allowing the system to anticipate traffic changes ahead.

Vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode operation

The vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode is designed to maintain a preset following distance from the vehicle ahead and can automatically reduce speed to match a slower-moving vehicle. If the vehicle ahead comes to a complete stop, the Nissan Sentra will decelerate smoothly to a standstill. However, the ICC system can apply only up to approximately 40% of the vehicle’s total braking force.

This system should be used only when traffic conditions allow vehicle speeds to remain relatively constant or change gradually. If another vehicle suddenly moves into your lane or if the vehicle ahead decelerates rapidly, the distance between vehicles may decrease because the ICC system may not be able to decelerate the Nissan Sentra quickly enough.

If this situation occurs, the ICC system will emit a warning chime and flash the system display to alert the driver to take immediate action.

The system will cancel automatically and a warning chime will sound if vehicle speed drops below approximately 15 mph (24 km/h) and no vehicle is detected ahead. The ICC system will also disengage if the Nissan Sentra exceeds the maximum set speed.

The following functions are controlled while operating in vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode:

The ICC system does not control vehicle speed or provide warnings when approaching stationary or very slow-moving vehicles. The driver must remain attentive and maintain a safe distance, particularly when approaching toll booths, traffic congestion, or stopped traffic.

Nissan Sentra Intelligent Cruise Control highway driving example

When driving on a freeway at a set speed and approaching a slower vehicle ahead, the ICC system in the Nissan Sentra automatically adjusts speed to maintain the selected following distance. If the vehicle ahead changes lanes or exits the freeway, the system accelerates smoothly and maintains speed up to the set value. The driver must stay attentive as the vehicle accelerates.

The Nissan Sentra may not maintain the set speed on winding roads or steep inclines. In such conditions, manual control of vehicle speed is required.

During normal operation, the ICC system automatically accelerates or decelerates the Nissan Sentra in response to the speed of the vehicle ahead.

Depress the accelerator pedal to increase speed when necessary, such as during a lane change. Apply the brake pedal to decelerate and maintain a safe distance if the vehicle ahead brakes suddenly or if another vehicle cuts in. Always remain alert and ready to take control when using the Intelligent Cruise Control system.
