Nissan Sentra B18 (2020-2025) Owner's Manual: Seat belt warning light and chime

Nissan Sentra seat belt warning light and audible chime indicator

The driver and front passenger seats in the Nissan Sentra are equipped with an enhanced seat belt reminder system. When this feature is active, both a visual warning and an audible chime will operate if the driver or front passenger seat belt remains unbuckled while the vehicle is traveling at approximately 9 mph (15 km/h) or higher under the following conditions:

  • If the driver’s seat belt is not fastened.
  • If the front passenger’s seat belt is not fastened and the seat is occupied for approximately 7 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position.
  • If the front passenger’s seat belt is not fastened and objects or external forces acting on the passenger seat cause the system to classify the seat as Occupied.

Under the conditions described above, the seat belt warning light will continue to flash until the required seat belt is securely fastened.

A warning chime will sound for approximately 90 seconds or until one of the following conditions occurs:

  • The unbuckled front occupant’s seat belt is properly fastened.
  • The seat belt reminder system no longer detects the front passenger seat as occupied.
  • The ignition is turned off or the vehicle is shifted into the P (Park) position.

The following situations may cause the Nissan Sentra seat belt reminder light to illuminate and the chime to sound even when no passenger is present in the front seat:

  • Heavy objects placed on the front passenger seat.
  • Someone pushing or pulling on the front passenger seat.
  • An object positioned underneath the front passenger seat.
  • An object lodged between the seat cushion and the center console or between the seat cushion and the door.
  • An item hanging on the seat or stored in the seatback pocket.
  • A child restraint or other object pressing against the rear of the seatback.

NOTE:

The rear seating positions of the Nissan Sentra are equipped with a seat belt warning message that appears in the vehicle information display.

Pregnant women

NISSAN recommends that pregnant women always use seat belts while riding in the Nissan Sentra. The seat belt should fit snugly, with the lap belt positioned as low as possible around the hips, not the waist. The shoulder belt should be placed over the shoulder and across the chest. Never route the lap or shoulder belt across the abdominal area. For individual guidance, consult your doctor.

Injured persons

NISSAN recommends that injured persons continue to use seat belts when riding in a Nissan Sentra. Always consult a medical professional for specific instructions based on the nature of the injury.
