The following descriptions are intended to help you better understand the scheduled maintenance items that must be inspected, serviced, or replaced at regular intervals to keep your Nissan Sentra operating reliably and efficiently.
The maintenance schedule outlines the specific mileage and time intervals at which each maintenance item requires attention.
In addition to scheduled maintenance, certain components of your Nissan Sentra should also be inspected during normal day-to-day driving and routine vehicle operation.
Items marked with "*" are recommended by NISSAN to ensure long-term durability, consistent performance, and dependable operation.
You are not required to personally perform maintenance on these items in order to maintain the warranties that come with your NISSAN vehicle. However, other maintenance items and service intervals are mandatory.
When applicable, additional details and procedures can be found in the "Do-it-yourself" section of this manual.
NOTE:
NISSAN does not advocate the use of non-OEM approved aftermarket flushing systems and strongly advises against performing such services on NISSAN products. Many aftermarket flushing systems use non-OEM approved chemicals or solvents, the use of which has not been tested or validated by NISSAN.
Emission Control System Maintenance
Air cleaner filter: Replace the air cleaner filter at the specified intervals to maintain proper airflow and engine efficiency.
When operating the Nissan Sentra for extended periods in dusty or dirty environments, inspect and replace the filter more frequently as needed.
Engine drive belts*: Inspect the engine drive belts for wear, fraying, cracking, or improper tension. Replace any belt that shows signs of damage or deterioration.
Engine coolant*: Replace the engine coolant at the specified interval. When adding or replacing coolant, always use Genuine NISSAN Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant (blue) or an equivalent product mixed at the proper ratio.
NOTE: Mixing different types of coolant or using non-distilled water may shorten the recommended coolant service interval and reduce cooling system effectiveness.
Engine oil and oil filter: Replace the engine oil and oil filter at the specified intervals to ensure proper engine lubrication and protection.
Engine valve clearance*: Inspection is required only if increased valve noise is present. Adjust valve clearance if necessary to restore proper operation.
Fuel filter: Periodic maintenance is not required.
(in-tank type filter)
Fuel lines/connections*: Inspect fuel hoses, piping, and connections for leaks, looseness, or deterioration. Tighten connections or replace components as required.
Fuel tank vapor vent system*: Check vapor lines for leaks or loose connections. Tighten or replace parts as necessary to maintain proper emissions control.
Spark plugs: Replace spark plugs at the specified service intervals.
Always install new spark plugs of the same type and specification as originally equipped in your Nissan Sentra.
Chassis and Body Maintenance
Brake lines and cables: Visually inspect for correct installation and check for chafing, cracks, corrosion, or leakage.
Any damaged or deteriorated components should be replaced immediately.
Brake pads, rotors, drums and linings: Inspect for wear, deterioration, and fluid leakage. Replace worn or damaged parts without delay.
Exhaust system: Visually inspect exhaust pipes, muffler, and hangers for leaks, cracks, corrosion, or physical damage. Tighten loose connections or replace parts as needed.
In-cabin microfilter: Replace at the specified intervals. When driving in dusty conditions for long periods, replace the filter more frequently to maintain cabin air quality.
Steering gear and linkage, axle and suspension parts, drive shaft boots: Inspect for looseness, damage, and oil or grease leakage. Under severe driving conditions, perform inspections more often.
Tire rotation: Rotate the tires at the interval specified in the maintenance schedule.
During tire rotation, inspect tires for uneven wear or damage and replace them if necessary.
Transmission fluid/oil: Visually inspect for leaks at the specified intervals. If using a roof-mounted carrier or driving frequently on rough, muddy, or uneven roads:
