Nissan Sentra B18 (2020-2025) Owner's Manual / Starting and driving / Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) with Pedestrian Detection

WARNING

Failure to carefully follow all warnings and instructions for proper use of the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) with Pedestrian Detection system could result in serious injury or death.

The Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection system on the Nissan Sentra is designed to assist the driver when there is a potential risk of a forward collision with a vehicle traveling ahead in the same lane or with a pedestrian detected ahead in the travel path.

Nissan Sentra Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection system overview

The AEB with Pedestrian Detection system uses a forward-facing radar sensor B located at the front of the Nissan Sentra to measure the distance and relative speed of vehicles ahead in the same lane. For pedestrian detection, the system also relies on a camera A installed behind the windshield, working together with the radar sensor to identify pedestrians in the vehicle’s path.

The AEB system on the Nissan Sentra operates at vehicle speeds above approximately 3 mph (5 km/h). For pedestrian detection functionality, the system operates within a speed range of approximately 6–37 mph (10–60 km/h).

If a potential forward collision is detected, the AEB with Pedestrian Detection system initially alerts the driver by flashing the vehicle-ahead detection indicator (yellow) in the vehicle information display and sounding an audible warning. If the driver applies the brakes firmly and quickly after this warning, and the system determines that a collision risk still exists, the system will automatically increase braking force to assist in reducing impact severity.

If the driver does not respond to the initial warning, the AEB with Pedestrian Detection system issues a second visual warning (flashing red and white) along with an audible alert. If the accelerator pedal is released, the system applies partial braking. If the risk of collision becomes imminent, the system will automatically apply stronger braking to help reduce vehicle speed.

While the AEB with Pedestrian Detection system is actively braking, a braking sound may be heard. This is normal and indicates that the Nissan Sentra’s braking system is functioning as intended.

NOTE:

The vehicle’s brake lights will illuminate whenever braking is applied by the AEB with Pedestrian Detection system.

Depending on vehicle speed, distance to the vehicle or pedestrian ahead, road conditions, and surrounding traffic, the system may help avoid a forward collision or help mitigate the severity of an unavoidable impact.

If the driver is actively steering, accelerating, or braking, the AEB with Pedestrian Detection system may respond later or may not intervene.

The automatic braking function will cease under the following conditions:

If the AEB with Pedestrian Detection system brings the Nissan Sentra to a complete stop, the vehicle will remain stationary for approximately 2 seconds before brake pressure is released.

AEB with Pedestrian Detection system limitations

WARNING

Listed below are the system limitations for the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) with Pedestrian Detection system on the Nissan Sentra. Failure to operate the vehicle in accordance with these system limitations could result in serious injury or death.

  • When the radar sensor or camera area is partially or fully obstructed by materials such as ice, snow, dirt, mud, or stickers, the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) with Pedestrian Detection system on the Nissan Sentra may not be able to properly detect objects or warn the driver in a timely manner. Always ensure that all sensor areas are regularly inspected, cleaned, and kept clear to maintain optimal system performance.
  • Under certain road and traffic conditions, the AEB with Pedestrian Detection system may unexpectedly apply partial braking. If immediate acceleration is required, firmly depress the accelerator pedal to override the system and maintain full control of the Nissan Sentra.
  • The AEB with Pedestrian Detection system may activate when it detects patterns, objects, shadows, reflections, or lighting conditions that resemble the outline, size, or position of vehicles, pedestrians, or motorcycle tail lights.
  • The system may continue operating when the vehicle ahead is making a right or left turn.
  • The system may also activate when your Nissan Sentra is approaching and passing another vehicle traveling ahead.
  • Depending on road geometry—including curved roads, entrances or exits of curves, winding roads, temporary lane regulations, or construction zones—the system may momentarily react to oncoming vehicles positioned in front of your vehicle.
