Nissan Sentra B18 (2020-2025) Owner's Manual: Push-button ignition switch

Nissan Sentra push-button ignition switch overview

WARNING

Do not operate the push-button ignition switch while driving the Nissan Sentra except in a true emergency. The engine will stop if the ignition switch is pressed three consecutive times in quick succession or if it is pressed and held for more than 2 seconds. If the engine stops while the vehicle is in motion, this may result in loss of control, a collision, and serious personal injury.

When the ignition switch is pressed without depressing the brake pedal, the ignition switch position indicator illuminates in the following sequence. Push the center of the switch:

The ignition switch will automatically return to the LOCK position when any door is opened or closed while the switch is in the OFF position.

The shift lever can be moved from the P (Park) position only when the ignition switch is in the ON position and the brake pedal is depressed.

If the vehicle battery is discharged, the ignition switch cannot be moved from the LOCK position.

Various indicators and warning messages related to ignition switch operation are displayed in the meter of the Nissan Sentra.

Operating range

Nissan Sentra Intelligent Key operating range

The Intelligent Key functions of the Nissan Sentra can be used only when the Intelligent Key is within the specified operating range.

When the Intelligent Key battery is nearly discharged or when strong radio waves are present near the vehicle, the operating range of the Intelligent Key system becomes reduced and may not function correctly.

If the Intelligent Key is within the operating range, it is possible for anyone, even a person not carrying the Intelligent Key, to press the ignition switch and start the engine.

The operating range for engine start is inside the passenger compartment of the Nissan Sentra.

Push-button ignition switch positions

LOCK (Normal parking position)

The ignition switch can only be locked in this position.

The ignition switch will be unlocked when it is pressed to the ON position while carrying the Intelligent Key.

The ignition switch will lock automatically when any door is opened or closed with the ignition switched off.

ON (Normal operating position)

In this position, the ignition system and all electrical accessories of the Nissan Sentra are activated, even though the engine is not running.

The ON position includes a battery saver feature. If the vehicle is not running, the ignition switch will automatically change to the OFF position after a certain period to help prevent battery discharge.

CAUTION

Do not leave the Nissan Sentra with the ignition switch in the AUTO ACC or ON position for an extended period when the engine is not running. Doing so may discharge the vehicle battery.

OFF

The ignition switch is in the OFF position when the engine is turned off using the push-button ignition switch. No indicator lights will be illuminated on the switch.

AUTO ACC:

Ensure the Nissan Sentra is in the P (Park) position and that the Intelligent Key is with you. Move the ignition switch from the ON position to the OFF position.

The vehicle will enter AUTO ACC mode. In this mode, the audio system and certain electronic accessories remain operational for a limited time under the following conditions:

Emergency engine shut off

To shut off the engine of the Nissan Sentra in an emergency situation while driving, perform one of the following actions:

NISSAN Intelligent Key battery discharge

Nissan Sentra Intelligent Key battery discharge procedure

If the battery of the NISSAN Intelligent Key is discharged, or if environmental conditions interfere with Intelligent Key operation, start the Nissan Sentra engine using the following procedure:

1. Place the shift lever in the P (Park) position.

2. Firmly apply the foot brake to ensure the Nissan Sentra remains stationary.

3. Touch the ignition switch with the Intelligent Key as illustrated. A confirmation chime will sound to indicate that the system has detected the Intelligent Key.

After step 3 is completed, if the ignition switch is pressed without depressing the brake pedal, the ignition switch position will change to the ON position, allowing electrical systems of the Nissan Sentra to activate.

4. Within 10 seconds after the chime sounds, push the ignition switch while fully depressing the brake pedal. The engine of the Nissan Sentra will then start normally.

NOTE:

NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System

The NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System is designed to enhance security and will not allow the engine of the Nissan Sentra to start unless a properly registered Intelligent Key is used.

If the engine does not start with a registered key, for example due to signal interference from another registered key, an automated toll device, or an automatic payment device located on the same key ring, restart the engine by performing the following steps:

1. Leave the ignition switch in the ON position for approximately 5 seconds.

2. Move the ignition switch to the OFF or LOCK position and wait approximately 10 seconds.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2.

4. Restart the engine while holding the device that may have caused interference away from the registered Intelligent Key.

If the no-start condition occurs again, NISSAN recommends keeping the registered Intelligent Key on a separate key ring to minimize potential interference from other electronic devices.
