Confirmation Procedure
CHECK DTC PRIORITY
If DTC P0053 is displayed with DTC P0031, P0032 or P0130, first perform the confirmation procedure (trouble diagnosis) for DTC P0031, P0032 or P0130.
Is DTC P0031, P0032 or P0130 detected?
YES >>Perform diagnosis of applicable.
P0031: Refer to DTC Description.
P0032: Refer to DTC Description.
P0130: Refer to DTC Description.
GO TO 2.
PRECONDITIONING
When DTC Confirmation Procedure has been preciously conducted, always perform the following before conducting the next test.
Turn ignition switch OFF and wait at least 10 seconds.
Turn ignition switch ON.
Turn ignition switch OFF and wait at least 10 seconds.
TEST CONDITION:
Before performing the following procedure, confirm that battery voltage is 11 V or more at idle.
>>GO TO 3.
PERFORM DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE
Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature reaches 25°C (77°F) or more.
Keep the engine at idle at least 35 seconds.
Check 1st trip DTC.
Is 1st trip DTC detected?
YES >>Proceed to DTC Diagnosis Procedure.
NO-1 >>To check malfunction symptom before repair: Refer to Intermittent Incident.
NO-2 >>Confirmation after repair: INSPECTION END
Dtc Diagnosis Procedure
CHECK DTC PRIORITY
If DTC P0053 is displayed with DTC P0031, P0032 or P0130, first perform the confirmation procedure (trouble diagnosis) for DTC P0031, P0032 or P0130.
Is DTC P0031, P0032 or P0130 detected?
YES >>Perform diagnosis of applicable.

P0032: Refer to DTC Description.
P0130: Refer to DTC Description.
GO TO 2.
CHECK AIR FUEL RATIO (A/F) SENSOR 1 POWER SUPPLY
Turn ignition switch OFF.
Disconnect air fuel ratio (A/F) sensor 1 harness connector.
Turn ignition switch ON.
Check the voltage between A/F sensor 1 harness connector and ground.

Is the inspection result normal?
YES >>GO TO 3.
NO >>GO TO 4.
CHECK A/F SENSOR 1 POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT
Turn ignition switch OFF.
Disconnect IPDM E/R harness connector.
Check the continuity between A/F sensor 1 harness connector and IPDM E/R harness connector.

Is the inspection result normal?
YES >>Perform the trouble diagnosis for power supply circuit.
NO >>Repair or replace malfunctioning part.
CHECK A/F SENSOR 1 HEATER OUTPUT SIGNAL CIRCUIT
Turn ignition switch OFF.
Disconnect ECM harness connector.
Check the continuity between A/F sensor 1 harness connector and ECM harness connector.

Also check harness for short to ground and short to power.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES >>GO TO 5.
NO >>Repair or replace malfunctioning part.
CHECK A/F SENSOR 1 HEATER
Refer to Component Inspection.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES >>INSPECTION END
NO >>GO TO 6.
REPLACE A/F SENSOR 1
Replace A/F sensor 1. Refer to Exploded View.
CAUTION:
Discard any A/F sensor which has been dropped from a height of more than 0.5 m (19.7 in) onto a hard surface such as a concrete floor; use a new one.
Before installing new A/F sensor, clean exhaust system threads.
