Nissan Sentra Supplemental Restraint System air bag precautions

Front and rear outboard seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bag and roof-mounted curtain side-impact and rollover supplemental air bag systems

The side air bags are located in the outer portions of the seatbacks of the front and rear outboard seats in the Nissan Sentra. The curtain air bags are installed in the side roof rails. All information, cautions, and warnings in this manual must be carefully followed. The side air bags and curtain air bags are designed to inflate in higher-severity side collisions, although they may also deploy if collision forces are similar to those of a higher-severity impact. These air bags are designed to inflate on the side of the vehicle that is impacted. They may not inflate in all side collisions.

Curtain air bags are also designed to deploy in certain rollover or near-rollover situations. As a result, specific vehicle movements, such as severe off-road maneuvers, may cause the curtain air bags to inflate.

Vehicle damage, or the absence of visible damage, does not always indicate whether the side air bag or curtain air bag systems have operated properly.

When the side air bags and curtain air bags deploy, a loud noise may be heard, followed by the release of a smoke-like substance. This substance is not harmful and does not indicate a fire. However, care should be taken to avoid inhaling it, as it may cause temporary irritation or choking. Occupants with respiratory conditions should seek fresh air promptly.

Side air bags, in combination with properly worn seat belts, help reduce impact forces to the chest and pelvic areas of front and rear outboard occupants. Curtain air bags help cushion impact forces to the heads of occupants in the front and rear outboard seating positions. These systems are designed to help save lives and reduce serious injuries, although deployment of side and curtain air bags may cause minor abrasions or other injuries.

Side air bags and curtain air bags in the Nissan Sentra are designed to supplement seat belts and do not provide restraint to the lower body.

For maximum protection in the Nissan Sentra, seat belts must be worn correctly at all times, and the driver, front passenger, and rear outboard occupants should sit upright and as far away as practical from the side air bag modules.

Rear seat passengers should be positioned as far away as reasonably possible from the door finishers and side roof rails. The side air bags and curtain air bags deploy very rapidly to help protect occupants. Due to this rapid deployment, the force of an inflating side air bag or curtain air bag may increase the risk of injury if an occupant is sitting too close to, leaning against, or directly contacting these air bag modules at the moment of inflation.

After a collision, the side air bag will deflate quickly once its protective function has been completed.

The curtain air bag will remain inflated for a short period of time to help provide continued head protection in certain impact or rollover scenarios.

The side air bags and curtain air bags operate only when the ignition switch of the Nissan Sentra is placed in the ON position.

After placing the ignition switch in the ON position, the supplemental air bag warning light illuminates. The supplemental air bag warning light will turn off after approximately 7 seconds if the system in the Nissan Sentra is functioning properly.
