Nissan Sentra B18 (2020-2025) Owner's Manual: Corrosion protection
Most common factors contributing to vehicle corrosion
Corrosion affecting your Nissan Sentra is most commonly caused by the following factors:
- The accumulation of moisture-retaining dirt, sand, and debris in body panel seams, cavities, and concealed areas.
- Damage to paint or other protective coatings caused by stone chips, gravel, or minor traffic impacts.
Environmental factors influence the rate of corrosion
Moisture
The buildup of sand, dirt, and water on the underside of the vehicle accelerates the corrosion process. Wet floor coverings may not dry completely inside the vehicle and should be removed and dried to help prevent corrosion of the floor panels.
Relative humidity
High relative humidity significantly accelerates corrosion, especially in regions where temperatures remain above freezing and where atmospheric pollution or road salt is present.
Temperature
Elevated temperatures increase the rate of corrosion, particularly in areas of the vehicle that are not well ventilated.
Air pollution
Industrial pollutants, salt-laden air in coastal regions, and heavy road salt usage all contribute to accelerated corrosion.
Road salt can also hasten the breakdown of painted surfaces, increasing the risk of exposed metal.
Protect your vehicle from corrosion
- Wash and wax your Nissan Sentra regularly to keep exterior surfaces clean and protected.
- Inspect painted surfaces frequently and repair minor paint damage as soon as possible.
- Ensure that drain holes at the bottom of the doors remain clear to prevent water accumulation.
- Periodically inspect the underbody for sand, dirt, or salt buildup and rinse with water promptly if contaminants are found.
Chemicals used for road surface de-icing are extremely corrosive and can accelerate the deterioration of underbody components such as the exhaust system, fuel and brake lines, brake cables, floor pan, and fenders.
During winter months, the underbody of your Nissan Sentra should be cleaned periodically.
For additional rust and corrosion protection, which may be necessary in certain climates or driving conditions, it is recommended that you consult a NISSAN dealer.
