Nissan Sentra B18 (2020-2025) Owner's Manual: Audio operation precautions
MP3 or WMA terms
- MP3 – MP3 stands for Moving Pictures Experts Group Audio Layer 3. It is
one of the most widely used compressed digital audio file formats. In the Nissan
Sentra audio system, MP3 files allow playback of near “CD-quality” sound while
using significantly less storage space than uncompressed audio files. When an
audio track is converted from a CD-ROM to MP3 format, the file size can typically
be reduced by about a 10:1 ratio with little or no noticeable loss in sound
quality. This is achieved by removing redundant and inaudible parts of the sound
signal that the human ear cannot perceive.
- WMA – Windows Media Audio (WMA)* is a compressed audio format developed
by Microsoft as an alternative to MP3. The WMA codec provides higher compression
efficiency than MP3, allowing more music tracks to be stored in the same amount
of memory while maintaining comparable sound quality when used with the Nissan
Sentra audio system.
- Bit rate – Bit rate refers to the number of bits processed per second in
a digital audio file. The overall size and sound quality of a compressed music
file are directly related to the bit rate selected during encoding. Higher bit
rates generally result in better sound quality but larger file sizes when played
in the Nissan Sentra.
- Sampling frequency – Sampling frequency is the rate at which an analog audio
signal is converted into a digital signal during analog-to-digital (A/D) conversion.
A higher sampling frequency allows for more accurate sound reproduction.
- Multisession – Multisession describes a method of writing data to storage
media. Writing data once is referred to as a single session, while writing additional
data at different times is called a multisession. Some multisession discs may
not be fully compatible with the Nissan Sentra audio system.
- ID3/WMA Tag – The ID3 or WMA tag is the portion of an encoded MP3 or WMA
file that contains descriptive information such as the song title, artist name,
album, bit rate, and track duration. In the Nissan Sentra, ID3 tag information
is displayed on the artist and song title line of the audio display.

USB (Universal Serial Bus) Connection Port
WARNING
- Do not connect, disconnect, or operate a USB device while driving. Doing
so may distract the driver. If you become distracted, you could lose control
of the Nissan Sentra and cause an accident resulting in serious injury or death.
CAUTION
- Do not force a USB device into the USB port. Inserting the device at
an angle or upside down may damage the port. Always ensure that the USB device
is correctly aligned before connection.
- Do not pull on the USB port cover (if so equipped) when removing a USB
device. This could damage both the cover and the USB port.
- Do not leave the USB cable where it may be pulled unintentionally. Pulling
on the cable may damage the USB port.
The Nissan Sentra is not supplied with a USB storage device.
USB devices must be purchased separately as needed.
This audio system cannot be used to format USB devices. To format a USB device,
use a personal computer before connecting it to the Nissan Sentra.
In some regions, the USB connection for the front seats may support audio playback
only, without image display, due to local regulations, even when the vehicle is
parked.
The Nissan Sentra audio system supports a wide range of USB memory devices, USB
hard drives, and iPod players. However, some USB devices may not be compatible with
this system.
- Partitioned USB devices may not operate correctly.
- Characters from certain languages (such as Chinese or Japanese) may not
display properly. For best results, use English characters for file and folder
names on USB devices used in the Nissan Sentra.
General notes for USB use:
- Refer to the USB device manufacturer’s instructions for proper use, handling,
and care of the device.
Notes for iPod use:
iPod is a trademark of Apple Inc., registered in the United States and other
countries.
- If the iPod is not connected properly, a checkmark icon may appear and disappear
repeatedly. Always ensure the iPod is securely connected to the Nissan Sentra
audio system.
- Audiobooks may not play in the same sequence as shown on the iPod.
- Large video files stored on an iPod may cause slow system response. In some
cases, the center display may temporarily go black but will recover automatically.
- If large video files are selected during shuffle playback, the center display
may momentarily turn black and then return to normal operation.
iPod* player
- Some characters used in non-Latin languages (such as Chinese or Japanese)
may not be displayed correctly on the vehicle center screen. For optimal compatibility
and readability when using the iPod player in the Nissan Sentra, it is recommended
to use English or Spanish characters for song titles, albums, and artist names.
- Large video podcast files may cause slower response times from the iPod.
In such cases, the Nissan Sentra center display may temporarily turn black;
however, normal operation will resume shortly without indicating a malfunction.
- If the iPod automatically selects large video podcast files while operating
in shuffle mode, the vehicle center display may momentarily black out and then
recover. This behavior is considered normal system operation.
- An improperly connected iPod cable may cause a checkmark icon to appear
and disappear repeatedly (flickering). Always ensure the iPod cable is securely
and correctly connected before use in the Nissan Sentra.
- Audiobooks may not play back in the same sequence as they are listed on
the iPod. Playback order is determined by the iPod’s internal indexing.
- To prevent cable damage and possible loss of function, avoid the following
conditions when using the iPod connection cable in the Nissan Sentra:
- Bending the cable excessively (maximum bend radius of approximately
1.6 in (40 mm)).
- Twisting the cable beyond 180 degrees.
- Pulling, stretching, or dropping the cable.
- Forcing the iPod cable connector into the device port.
- Closing the center console lid on the cable or connectors.
- Storing sharp-edged objects near the cable.
- Spilling liquids on the cable or connectors.
- Do not connect the cable to the iPod if the cable or connectors are wet,
as this may cause permanent damage to the device.
- If the cable or connectors have been exposed to water, allow them to dry
completely before reconnecting to the iPod. A drying period of at least 24 hours
is recommended.
- If the connector is exposed to liquids other than water, evaporative residue
may create a short circuit between connector pins. In this case, replace the
cable to prevent damage and loss of functionality.
- If the cable shows visible damage (such as cut insulation, cracked connectors,
or contamination from liquids, dust, or debris), discontinue use immediately.
It is recommended that you visit a NISSAN dealer to replace the cable with a
genuine replacement.
- When the iPod cable is not used for extended periods, store it in a clean,
dry, dust-free environment at room temperature and away from direct sunlight.
- Use the iPod cable only for its intended purpose within the Nissan Sentra
audio system.

Bluetooth streaming audio
- Some Bluetooth audio devices may not be recognized or may have limited functionality
when paired with the Nissan Sentra audio system.
- Before using Bluetooth streaming audio, a wireless connection must be properly
established between a compatible Bluetooth audio device and the in-vehicle Bluetooth
module.
- Bluetooth audio operating procedures vary depending on the device used.
Become familiar with your device’s controls before using it with the Nissan
Sentra audio system.
- Bluetooth audio playback may be interrupted under the following conditions:
- When receiving a call through the Bluetooth Hands-Free Phone System.
- When the system is checking or re-establishing the hands-free phone
connection.
- Do not place the Bluetooth audio device in an area surrounded by metal or
far from the in-vehicle Bluetooth module, as this may degrade sound quality
or disrupt the wireless connection.
- When a device is connected via Bluetooth, its battery may discharge faster
than usual due to continuous wireless communication.
- The Nissan Sentra audio system supports Bluetooth Audio Distribution Profile
(A2DP) and Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) for compatible devices.
BLUETOOTH is a trademark owned by Bluetooth SIG, Inc. and is licensed to Panasonic.
