Steering Wheel. Inspection. Inspection

Inspection

CONDITION OF INSTALLATION

  • Check installation condition of power steering gear assembly, front suspension, front drive shaft and steering column.

  • Check if movement exists when steering wheel is moved up and down, to the left and right and to the axial direction.

    Steering wheel axial end play

    : Refer to Steering Wheel.

  • Verify that the power steering gear nuts are tightened to specification. Refer to Exploded View.

STEERING WHEEL PLAY

Turn tires straight ahead, start engine, then turn steering wheel to the left and right lightly. Measure steering wheel movement on the outer circumference of the steering wheel when it is turned to the point where tires start moving.

Steering wheel axial end play

: Refer to Steering Wheel.

If play is outside specifications, check the following items:

  • Backlash for each joint of the steering column

  • Installation condition of steering gear and linkage

NEUTRAL POSITION OF STEERING WHEEL

Check neutral position of steering wheel after confirming that front wheel alignment is correct. Refer to Inspection.

Turn wheels straight ahead. Check if steering wheel is in the neutral position.

If it is not in the neutral position, loosen inner socket lock nuts and adjust inner sockets by the same amount in opposite directions until steering wheel attains neutral position. Tighten inner socket lock nuts to specification. Refer to Exploded View.

CAUTION:

Check wheel alignment after adjustment. Refer to Inspection.

STEERING WHEEL TURNING FORCE

Park Nissan Sentra vehicle on a level and dry surface, set parking brake.

Tires need to be inflated to normal pressure. Refer to Tire Air Pressure.

Start engine.

Check steering wheel turning force using Tool when steering wheel has been turned 360° from the neutral position.

Tool number

:  —  (NI-44372)

Steering wheel turning force

: Refer to Steering Wheel.

FRONT WHEEL TURNING ANGLE

Perform toe-in inspection. Refer to Inspection.

CAUTION:

Perform front wheel turning angle inspection after toe-in inspection.

Place front wheels on turning radius gauges and rear wheels on stands, so that Nissan Sentra vehicle can be level.

Check the maximum inner and outer wheel turning angles for LH and RH road wheels.

  • With engine at idle, turn steering wheel from full left stop to full right stop and measure the turning angles.

    Inner wheel (Angle: A)

    : Refer to Steering Angle.

    Outer wheel (Angle: B)

    : Refer to Steering Angle.

  • Check the following items when turning angle is outside of specification.

    • Check rack stroke (L).

      (L)

      : Refer to Rack Stroke.

    • If rack stroke is out of specification, replace steering gear assembly.

      • Steering angles are not adjustable. Check steering gear assembly, steering column assembly, and front suspension components for wear or damage if any of the turning angles are different from the specified value. Replace any of them, if any non-standard condition exists.

Steering Column. Inspection. Inspection

Inspection

STEERING COLUMN

  • Check each part of steering column for damage or other malfunctions. Replace entire steering column if any parts are damaged.

  • Check length (L) as shown if Nissan Sentra vehicle has been involved in a collision. Replace steering column if column length is outside specification.

    Steering column length (L)

    : Refer to Steering Column.

  • Measure steering column rotating torque using suitable tool (A). Replace steering column if rotating torque is outside specification.

    Rotating torque

    : Refer to Steering Column.

  • Check tilt and telescopic mechanism operating range (A) and (B) as shown.

    Tilt operating range (A)

: Refer to Steering Column .

    Telescopic operating range (B)

    : Refer toSteering Column.

Lower Joint. Inspection. Inspection

Inspection

LOWER JOINT

Check each part of lower joint for damage or other malfunctions. Replace if necessary.

Check length (L) of lower joint as shown if Nissan Sentra vehicle has been involved in a collision.

Lower joint length (L)

: Refer to Lower Joint.

Steering Gear and Linkage. Inspection. Inspection

INSPECTION AFTER DISASSEMBLY

STEERING GEAR

  • Check steering gear housing and boots for looseness, damage and grease leakage.

  • Check connection with steering column for looseness.

    (A)

    : Check for grease leakage

    (B)

    : Check for looseness

STEERING LINKAGE

  • Check ball joint, dust cover and other component parts for looseness, wear, damage and grease leakage.

OUTER SOCKET AND INNER SOCKET

  • Ball joint swinging torque

    • Hook the Tool at the measuring point and pull the Tool. Make sure that the Tool reads the specified value when ball stud and inner socket start to move. Replace outer socket or inner socket if the measured values are outside the standard.

Measuring point of outer socket (1)

: Ball stud upper side (A)

Measuring point of inner socket (2)

      : Point (B)

      Tool number

      : — (NI-44372)

      Swinging torque

: Refer to Ball Joint Swing Force.

  • Ball joint rotating torque

    • Make sure that the reading is within the following specified range using Tool. Replace outer socket if the reading is outside the specification.

      Tool number (A)

      : ST3127S000 (NI-25765-A)

      Rotating torque

: Refer to Ball Joint Swing Force.

  • Ball joint axial end play

    • Apply an axial load of 490 N (50 kg, 110 lb.) to ball stud. Measuring the amount of stud movement using a suitable tool, make sure that the value is within specification. Replace outer socket (A) and inner socket (B) if the measured value is outside specification.

      Axial end play

: Refer to Ball Joint Axial End Play.

INSPECTION AFTER INSTALLATION

Check if steering wheel turns smoothly when it is turned several times fully to the end of the left and right.

Check the steering wheel play, neutral position steering wheel, steering wheel turning force, and front wheel turning angle.
