Nissan Sentra B18 (2020-2025) Owner's Manual: Reporting safety defects

For USA

If you believe that your Nissan Sentra has a defect that could cause a crash or could result in serious injury or death, you should immediately notify the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in addition to contacting NISSAN.

If NHTSA receives similar complaints, it may initiate an investigation. If the investigation determines that a safety-related defect exists in a group of vehicles, NHTSA may order a recall and corrective action campaign. Please note that NHTSA is not able to become involved in individual disputes between you, your dealer, or NISSAN.

To contact NHTSA, you may call the Vehicle Safety Hotline toll-free at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-800-424-9153), visit http://www.safercar.gov, or write to: Administrator, NHTSA, 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE, Washington, D.C. 20590. Additional information regarding motor vehicle safety is also available at http://www.safercar.gov.

You may also notify NISSAN directly by contacting the NISSAN Consumer Affairs Department toll-free at 1-800-NISSAN-1. Reporting safety concerns helps ensure the continued safety and reliability of your Nissan Sentra.

For Canada

If you believe that your Nissan Sentra has a defect that could cause a crash, injury, or death, you should promptly inform Transport Canada in addition to notifying NISSAN.

If Transport Canada receives multiple complaints of a similar nature, it may open an investigation. Should a safety-related defect be confirmed in a group of vehicles, Transport Canada may request that NISSAN initiate a recall campaign. However, Transport Canada does not intervene in individual issues between a customer, a dealer, or the manufacturer.

You may contact Transport Canada’s Defect Investigations and Recalls Division toll-free at 1-800-333-0510. Safety defects may also be reported online at: http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/motorvehiclesafety/menu.htm (English) or http://www.tc.gc.ca/fra/securiteautomobile/menu.htm (French).

Written correspondence may be sent to: Transport Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Investigations Laboratory, 80 Noel Street, Gatineau, QC J8Z 0A1.

Additional motor vehicle safety information is available through Transport Canada’s Road Safety Information Centre at 1-800-333-0371 or online at www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety (English) and www.tc.gc.ca/securiteroutiere (French).

To notify NISSAN of any safety-related concerns in Canada, please contact the NISSAN Consumer Information Centre toll-free at 1-800-387-0122.

Readiness for Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) test

Due to legal requirements in certain U.S. states and Canadian provinces, your Nissan Sentra may be required to meet specific conditions known as the “ready condition” before undergoing an Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) emissions test.

The vehicle reaches the “ready condition” after being driven through specific driving patterns. In most cases, normal daily driving of the Nissan Sentra will allow the emission control system monitors to reset automatically.

If a powertrain system component is repaired or the vehicle battery is disconnected, the system may revert to a “not ready” condition.

Before presenting the vehicle for an I/M test, verify the inspection/ maintenance readiness status. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position without starting the engine. If the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) illuminates steadily for approximately 20 seconds and then blinks for about 10 seconds, the I/M readiness status is “not ready.” If the MIL does not blink after the initial 20 seconds, the system is in the “ready” condition.

If necessary, it is recommended that you visit an authorized NISSAN dealer to assist in setting the proper readiness condition or to prepare your Nissan Sentra for emissions inspection testing.
